It can be challenging to maintain ideal rumen conditions in lactating dairy cattle. Ruminal pH responds to changes in animal behaviors and the chemical composition and physical form of the diet. This study by U.S. researchers quantifies the links between neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake, diet particle size and ruminal pH. Nutritionists and producers can use this information to help develop feeding recommendations.
