During weaning, epithelial cell function in the rumen transitions from a pre-ruminant to a true ruminant environment. In this study, molecular markers of rumen development and gene networks regulating the rumen epithelium were identified. This information can help select targets and methods for improving rumen development and function, particularly in the growing calf.
